Running it for something bigger than yourself changes everything. This April, Phil dela Merced will run the Boston Marathon in support of the One World Strong Foundation, an organization that provides medical, social, and community support for trauma survivors and their families around the world. Phil works in healthcare with trauma patients and sees first-hand how important that support can be. “Working in healthcare with trauma patients, One World Strong does so much for trauma survivors and their communities,” Phil shared. “Knowing my patients can receive this type of support means the world, and I’m so proud to run for them.” This will be Phil’s first Boston Marathon and his fourth World Marathon Major as he continues his pursuit of becoming a Six Star finisher. When the opportunity came to run Boston through One World Strong, it aligned with both his personal and professional purpose. “Knowing I can accomplish my life goals while helping a patient population I am close with means everything,” he said. Born from the tragic events of the Boston Marathon in 2013, One World Strong continues to provide care, resources, and community to trauma survivors across the globe. She lost her short-term memory for months, was out of work on disability, and found herself in a dark place trying to process it all. Running became her outlet. “I fell a lot in the beginning due to neuropathy caused by the organ damage,” she shared. “But each time I fell, I would pick myself up and keep going.” Jess was inspired by Adrianne Haslet, who lost her leg in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and later returned to run the race. That story stayed with her. Something life-changing and out of her control happened, and she chose to respond with strength. Now Jess is doing the same. Boston is not just a finish line for her - it is proof. Proof that her body can do hard things again. Proof that the darkest stretch of her life did not get the final word. And proof that even a rare diagnosis can spark a very real impact for the millions of people living with liver disease.
